Maintenance Engineer

Maintenance Engineers are responsible for the proper functioning of equipment. Their advanced knowledge of equipment maintenance makes them essential links in the continuous improvement of the site’s general safety and security.


Anticipates and plans

Maintenance Engineers organise major equipment shutdowns to permit the carrying out of maintenance work; but they must also have a long-term view of the major work to be done. They participate actively in their department’s budgeting process. They also have responsibility for preventing breakdowns. Indeed, breakdowns force production shutdowns, which have an adverse impact on costs. If a failure occurs, despite everyone’s best efforts, Maintenance Engineers establish a diagnosis and determine the best approach for restarting the equipment. They also advise teams of maintenance technicians.

Gives impetus to Safety and Security procedures

Maintenance Engineers participate actively in their respective department’s approach to safety and security. They perform risk analyses and audits. They are the driving force for the continuous improvement of equipment. They relentlessly analyse malfunctions, and propose corrective measures and carry them out in order to increase productivity. They are also a source of proposals if new equipment is to be integrated. They are the ones who study the markets for new technologies and who draft technical specifications.

What are the essential qualities?

Attention to detail and sense of responsibility

In order to handle various types of problems, Maintenance Engineers must have good analysis and synthesis skills. Assuming responsibility, often quickly, calls for initiative. They also set the example for safety. Indeed, they are the ones responsible for enforcing and monitoring compliance with the standards for safety, hygiene, environment and regulations.

Maintenance Engineers work jointly with professionals from various sectors and cultural settings.

Educational requirements

The conventional path
After obtaining a fairly scientific bac, it is necessary to prepare for the competitive entrance exams for the conventional industrial engineering schools (e.g., Arts et Métiers) or for the generalist engineering schools. These schools are in France; however, it is possible to complete the qualifying courses in New Caledonia, at Lycée Jules-Garnier. This is followed by three years of studies at the engineering school.

In short:
Scientific bac => qualifying courses for the major schools => entrance competition for engineering school

The roads less travelled
There are other educational routes that lead to the profession of Production Engineer.

• One option is to earn a technical BTS (vocational training certificate) and from there complete qualifying courses for an ATS (senior technician adjustment), and from there write the entrance exam for an engineering school.

In short:
General or technical bac => BTS=> qualifying courses for ATS=> entrance competition for engineering school

Note: qualifying courses for ATS are offered in New Caledonia, at Lycée Jules Garnier.

University is another option, but it is recommended that students major in industrial maintenance and/or engineering sciences.
