Troubleshoots, solves problems and shows versatility

An application to install? Monitor broken? Computer refuses to boot? Hello IT Department! In our all-digital era, IT Technicians are a company’s nerve centre. They are able to resolve many kinds of problems and find quick and effective solutions.

Diagnoses expertly

When computer problems are reported by users, IT Technicians begin with a diagnosis. To ensure that the diagnosis leads to an effective solution, they ask questions based on troubleshooting algorithms. The answers to the questions lead the technician to a solution for the user.

Intervenes everywhere

IT Technicians may be asked to perform other tasks. Depending on the IT Department’s needs, technicians may be seconded to help colleagues elsewhere.

What are the essential qualities?

A specialised technician

This profession is impossible without a thorough knowledge of the specific types and characteristics of hardware and their operating environments. IT Technicians are always working with various platforms and dissimilar pieces of equipment: video conferencing and teleconferencing, for example. Consequently, employers view a specialisation in any one of these areas as an asset.

On the lookout for technological developments

IT Technicians must be open-minded, up to date on best practices and curious in order to develop their skills and consider new technologies pertinent to their sector of activity. Thorough, organised and methodical, they cope well with stress and urgent issues.

Available, attentive and a good teacher

Availability, ability to listen, and a keen sense of customer service are essential when the task at hand is to troubleshoot a problem. Once the root cause of a problem is identified, IT Technicians then take the necessary steps to ensure the problem will not happen again. This may involve writing procedures, as well as explaining best practices to users. This work appeals to the teacher in them. On call, they must be willing to work day and night, and also on weekends.

Educational requirements

Training to become an IT Technician is at the bac + 2 and +3 levels.

There are several options: BTS (vocational training certificate), DEUST (a university diploma in scientific and technical studies) and DUT (university technology diploma).

BTS IRIST (computing and networks for industry and technical services)
BTS SIO (computing services for organisations)
BTS electronic systems
DUT computing; DUT networks and telecommunications; DUT electrical engineering and industrial computing
DEUST assistant, micro-networks and software

Note that Université de Nouvelle- Calédonie offers a program leading to a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Sciences with a sub-major in computing
